The Hotel Heiden, located in the picturesque Appenzeller Vorderland, is a remarkable example of the combination of traditional and modern architecture. Originally designed in 1970 by Heiden-born architect Otto Glaus, the building reflects the minimalist concrete construction style that was characteristic of Glaus. His design made it possible to fully capture the breathtaking panorama of Lake Constance and the surrounding hilly landscape.
Over the decades, however, numerous conversions and extensions led to the hotel's original open-plan structure being lost, compromising its spaciousness and unique views. In order to correct this situation and adapt the hotel to modern requirements, a comprehensive renovation was carried out in 2022 under the direction of Zurich interior designer Leslie Nader. The aim of this core refurbishment was to restore the original character of the building while offering contemporary comfort.
A central element of the new design was to open up the panoramic view. To achieve this, the original state of the ground floor was reconstructed, with walls and doors removed and the floor coverings renewed. The entire house was given new windows to maximise the view of the surrounding landscape. An open space of 720 square metres was created to create a meeting place that radiates calm, openness and serenity. Upon entering the hotel, guests are now greeted by a 240 square metre lobby with a sun room, living room with fireplace and reception, which offers views of the distant horizon.
When designing the interior, Nader placed particular emphasis on the use of natural materials and the integration of regional elements. Materials such as regional oak wood, rough plaster and natural fibres were used. The rooms have block parquet flooring and the walls of the rooms on the first and second floors are adorned with plaster casts of the famous St. Gallen lace from the local Bischof Textil AG. Original vintage furniture complements the contemporary furnishings, and black and white photographs of the Appenzellerland put guests in the mood for excursions and discoveries.
Through this careful yet innovative renovation, the original architectural vision of Otto Glaus has been successfully combined with the requirements and comfort of the present day. Today, the Hotel Heiden presents itself as a place that honours the rich tradition of the region while offering modern luxury, making it equally attractive for those interested in architecture and those seeking relaxation. In addition to the Hotel Heiden, Otto Glaus also designed the nearby Kursaal Heiden, another architectural jewel of the region. The Kursaal, known for its simple elegance and functional design, serves as a cultural venue and hosts concerts, conferences and social events. Its clear design language makes it an important part of Heiden's architectural heritage.
Just as remarkable is the Heiden swimming pool, built in 1932/33 by engineer Beda Hefti. It impresses with its modern architecture and is one of the most beautiful swimming facilities in the region. The combination of clean lines and open structures creates a unique atmosphere that offers both relaxation and aesthetic pleasure.A touch of France has recently come to Heiden, in the former Barissimo at Poststrasse 32a: just in time for France's national holiday on 14 July, the Hotel Heiden opened the pop-up restaurant ‘Chez Henry’ – a place that combines French bistro culture with local flair. The name is a double tribute: to the French women's national football team, which stayed at the Hotel Heiden during WEURO 2025, and to the great humanist Henry Dunant, whose spirit of humanity and hospitality shapes the concept.
At Chez Henry, nothing is set in stone: the menu changes regularly and is influenced by seasonal ideas, market trends and exciting guest chefs. Sometimes rustic, sometimes refined – but always as regional as possible, made with love and only available for a short time.
13 August to 6 September 2025 with guest chef Micha Merz
Every evening, Micha Merz transforms Chez Henry into a Parisian bistro serving classic French cuisine – with a modern twist, seasonal ingredients and great attention to detail. Early reservations are recommended as seating is limited.
Mid-November 2025 to the end of February 2026
Chez Henry becomes a cosy fondue restaurant – perfect for winter evenings with friends, family or for Christmas dinners with business associates.
The team at Hotel Heiden is looking forward to creating a new meeting place with ‘Chez Henry’.
À bientôt at Chez Henry
